Holly's Fight for Justice: This is part of my personally journey. It was featured in Reader's Digest written by Rick Mofina.

My life changed the day I was violated/raped. If I had not taken the steps to speak out SERIAL RAPIST ALI RASAI would still be at large today! I did speak out!

This violent crime changed my life!

How to talk to me about being raped? That is simply just ask......

Victim of a serial rapist, the young woman from Red Deer, Alta., determined to bring her attacker to trial

HOLLY JILL DESIMONE will never silence the sound of the rapist's zipper opening behind her. "Count backward from ten!" he ordered, forcing her onto her hands and knees against a chair in her apartment in Red Deer, Alta. Photographs of her seven-year-old son and five-year-old daughter smiled from across the room as the man assaulted her.

We need to educate and work together as a society to prevent violence

First of all I want to apologize because English is not my mother tongue but I want to make some comments here about this story. I am Portuguese and I work for the Justice in my country.

This story represents the lack of communications between countries and also a "fail" of several judicial systems. Western countries aren't ready yet to deal with a good "law for foreigners", in this case immigrants. I do believe this is the nowadays challenge for Western countries.
Let's talk about the rape. Right after the rape took place, you should have called authorities and not friends. I understand you, but the evidence against him was lost because you took a shower. A woman victim of rape cannot take a shower because it's always possible to get a sample of sperm to get the DNA from the offender. At the same time it's always good to call the Police because they can also try to get fingerprints of the attacker, for instance.
Under that scenario, there were all the evidences that he was at your appartment and that he raped you.
On your case, you knew the offender, but let's imagine you didn't know him at all. There was no evidence against him.
In some cases, when a rape takes place on the victim's bed it is also necessary to pick up the sheets and send them to the Lab. Sometimes samples of semen are also present on sheets and also pubic hair.
So, this is the basic for a victim of rape: no shower and call the authorities as soon as possible. I know this is the hardest for a victim because generally the first reaction is to shower, shower and shower...but it is a mistake.
For other victims I can say, do never fall on the "no one will believe you". If you take no shower and call the authorities who is not going to believe?
Ok, now let's get focused on Ali, the Iranian.
I believe this man is not only a rapist. He stands behind something for sure. He travels, he has money! This is not a profile for someone seeking for asylum. Something here stinks. He has money to pay for fake documents. Knowing there is always an organization behind to make fake papers, I wonder "who is that man"? The story of being a former bodyguard from the Shah of Iran doesn't convince me at all. Rheza Palevi was the last Shah of Iran till the revolution of 1979 who set in the power the Ayatollah Khomeini, if I am not wrong. I think this is his cover story to walk freely abroad. The same happened in Europe when lots of criminals from Romenia used the same cover story "I used to be a bodyguard of Ceausescu".
Fake documents generally are expensive. Where was he getting the money if he was a jobless.
This could lead us to a debate. The problem of the fake documents. This is a big issue and some countries are not aware of it as they do not insert strong secury data inside the paper document, easying the life to someone who fakes documents.
Nowadays the situation here in Europe is not good. There is an agreement between some countries called "schengen agreement". This agreement allows a citizen from outside Europe to travel all Schengen countries with just an entry visa for one country. Example: an entry visa issued by France, allows a person to travel to Portugal, Spain, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, etc, etc...
If authorities of the entry airport don't check carefully the document, that person will be free to travel all over Europe.
There is also another technique he could be using although if he was caught in Turkey, that's strange. He could be travelling with real and good documents but with wrong data inserted. This is very difficult for the authorities to spot. Anyway, it doesn't seem so as he was caught in Holland.
So, summing up: he is something more than a rapist. He has been deported from Turkey to Hong Kong, to Germany, to Canada...
Do you really believe an ex-bodyguard, seeking for political ashylum could have so much money on his bank account? Where does the money come from? Don't forget he took $22,000 from his bank account. This is too much for a refugee!!
What happened here is not only a fail from the Justice of Canada. It's also a fail from Australian authorities. It's a fail from Norway, from Turkey (I didn't understand why didn't they arrest the guy) because Western countries were not prepared for this challenge.
The introdution of an Identity Card for US citizens and also for the UK in the future is one step to stop this although anything makes miracles.
I know Western Europe, USA and Canada are working with those issues to avoid it. Homework is being done and I really do hope your story won't repeat because due to lack of agreements, lack of responsability at checking carefully documents and worse than that: authorities not checking Interpol databases at airports.

I read your story... Wow! I can feel your pain for I was raped as a child (by a cousin) and again at 15. I never told anyone about either incident until I had moved out of the State I was living in.. and then it was a shared moment with my best friend.
I have endured other forms of abuse not limited to this and will willingly fight with you.
Keep up the good works!

Hi tinkerbell-aka-cat,
Thank you for the courage in sharing that you rape as a child. And again at 15 years old, like most we are not alone in not telling anyone. Most of us have experiences in respect to abuse! I hope our future will hold a zero tolerance to any type of abuse!! I hope our future leads us to join in the fight against violence. Thank you for willing to join that fight against abuse of any kind.

it's so easy for the first commenter to say things like oh, you shouldn't have done this, or that you did that wrong, or that was a mistake, but i think that it's much easier to comment and analyse after the situation, and even more so when it didn't happen to them, isn't it?

Excellent story and good luck with your campaign. He only got 4 1/2 years? In some places that might've earned a life sentence.

Holly Desimone said...

Hi Frank,
Thank you for reading the story, your right in some places it would have earned a life sentence.
In total Ali Rasai received 10 years but in Canada, the offender gets time served while waiting for trial. That is how is received the 4.5 years. He did serve all his time, it was a total of over 6.5 years, if you court time before trial. Also the other women sentence is not included in my quote here for time served. Take care, stop in again.

"BREAKING NEWS"
===============

-Energy and Asset Technology, Inc. (EGTY) owns a global license to market
the genetically enhanced Global Cedar growth trees, with plans to
REVOLUTIONIZE the forest-timber industry.

These newly enhanced Global Cedar trees require only 9-12 years of growth before they can
be harvested for lumber, whereas worldwide growth time for lumber is 30-50 years.

Other than growing at an astonishing rate, the Global Cedar has a number of other benefits.
Its natural elements make it resistant to termites, and the lack of oils and sap found in the wood
make it resistant to forest fire, ensuring higher returns on investments.

the wood is very lightweight and strong, lighter than Poplar and over twice
as strong as Balsa, which makes it great for construction. It also has
the unique ability to regrow itself from the stump, minimizing the land and
time to replant and develop new root systems.

Based on current resources and agreements, EGTY projects revenues of $140 Million
with an approximate profit margin of 40% for each 9-year cycle. With anticipated
growth, EGTY is expected to challenge Deltic Timber Corp. during its initial 9-year cycle.

Deltic Timber Corp. currently trades at over $38.00 a share with about $153 Million in revenues.
As the reputation and demand for the Global Cedar tree continues to grow around the world
EGTY believes additional multi-million dollar agreements will be forthcoming. The Global Cedar nursery has produced
about 100,000 infant plants and is developing a production growth target of 250,000 infant plants per month.

Energy and Asset Technology is currently in negotiations with land and business owners in New Zealand,
Greece and Malaysia regarding the purchase of their popular and profitable fast growing infant tree plants.
Inquiries from the governments of Brazil and Ecuador are also being evaluated.

Hi, Holly.. I just want to say that I am sincerely sorry that you had to experience what you did.. obviously rape alone is enough to cause an emotional meltdown, but what happened afterwards is terrible. It saddens me greatly to think of the awful things people do to each other, and I want to express my heartfelt sorrow that you were victimized i this way. I don't have the words to describe how this makes me feel. No one deserves such an experience.

I am very glad that he was finally caught and that at least some justice was served. What makes me angry is that while his punishment for his crimes against you is four and a half years, you will be living with the scars of what happened for the rest of your life. I believe in karma, though, and I imagine he might find it a bitch while in prison.

I wish you the very best and I earnestly hope you are able to recover from what happened.

Personally I do believe education, awareness and reporting are important in sexual assaults. We can only hope that our messages to support anyone who has been assaulted will be heard. Sexual assaults are the most unreported crimes, with statistics showing many at risk to become a victim of this horrible crime. I am glad your speaking out about Acquaintance rape, keep up the great work to Marj, many will learn from your experience.

Hi Holly,
I just wanted to give you a news tip in case you wanted to write about it. rapestop.net is going to be selling an anti-rape device called RapeX. Holly Desimone said...

Hi saskboy,
I seen an article yesterday, about it may not be ready for marketing yet. I been looking today, if it does go out on the market, I think it would most likely be used in South Africa first. If the device is successful and brought to Canada you bring up some interesting points about prevention, and awareness. I personally feel the medical community in Canada would be against the device! Thank you for stopping in, take care

Holly, yours is a powerful story of courage and hope. No one should have to go thru what you experienced. As a grandfather I worry about the safety of my grandchildren and the lenient sentences handed out to sexual pedators. In the States were are staring to turn this around. Many states are now passing Jessica's Law, which as you probably know mandates stiff penalties to sexual offenders.

To help promote Jessica's Law and other measures to protect our grandchildren I am calling all grandfathers (papas) to join me in forming Papas Army. The goal is to get grandfathers actively involved in protecting the innocence of our grandchildren

Hi Holly,
Congratulations. You are indeed a remarkable woman who was able to stand up for your right against a person who took liberty with your physical weakness to abuse you. It's a good thing that you were able to summon that courage to stand up and accuse your attacker. How many women just remained silent and suffered silently the indignity done to them? I think they are many. What you have done may embolden them to come out in the open and bring their tormentors to the bar of justice for their long delayed punishments. There can be no abusers if there are no timid women who would just remain silent after they were ravaged by someone. Thanks for standing up for your right. You are indeed a beacon of light to this dark and dreary world of abusers and manipulators. Thanks for the courageous post. God bless you and your family. Have a wonderful and peaceful day always.

Alexis Moore, a person who has been very supportive of my book,Courage in Patience, e-mailed me this morning asking that I spread the word about her need for support of the first bill that her organization, Survivors in Action, has submitted to the California legislature. The bill would create a database of people convicted of domestic violence, no longer allowing people with a history of domestic violence to keep the abuse hidden. There is a sample letter you can copy & paste for ease in submission. If you prefer to e-mail rather than fax the letter, the link to Fiona Ma's office is at the bottom of the page. Just copy & paste the text of the letter into the "contact me" box on Fiona Ma's webpage. Thanks!
Beth
Nadgas Law: The California Domestic Violence Database Law California We Need Your Support: One Person Can Make a Difference
Every 12 seconds a woman is beaten in this country as the result of domestic violence. The FBI reports that domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 to 44—more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. California has the special opportunity to help protect women and children and promote healthy families. One letter can make a difference!

The present antiquated laws are doing little to prevent or deter domestic abuse. This bill will send a strong message to domestic abusers and to what would be potential abusers that domestic abuse will not be tolerated and that their violent past will not go unnoticed by the general public.

We need letters of support as your opinion does matter California. Please fax or e-mail letters of support to Assemblywoman Fiona Ma today. I have included a sample letter here for you to use. One person, one letter can make a life saving difference!

Here is some background information on the bill.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PREVENTIONAND RIGHT-TO-KNOW ACT OF 2008
Assembly Bill 1771 (Ma)

According to the Department of Justice, more than 180,000 Californians call in each year for assistance in dealing with domestic violence, and more than half of those calls involve a weapon. By the time a call comes in it could be too late.

California can reduce the number of domestic violence incidents by providing information about prior convictions online, and by providing potential victims with useful tools to avoid violence. This information is already public; any person with means can hire a private investigator to conduct a search. However, many Californians are without the means or ability to secure such services and deserve to know if a potential partner could place them at risk.

The Domestic Violence Prevention and Right-to-Know Act of 2008, also known as “Nadga’s Law,” would require the following:

1. The Attorney General would develop an online database that would report the name, date of birth, county and date of conviction for individuals convicted of felony domestic violence or multiple counts of misdemeanor domestic violence. The database would keep updated information available for 10 years.

2. The Superior Court of a county would be required, without charge, to provide additional information to a requester about a domestic violence conviction.

3. The prior conviction could be used to secure a restraining order against the individual.

4. A new assessment would be placed on domestic violence convictions to provide additional funding for domestic violence programs.

With this simple change, Californians will be able to protect themselves and their loved ones from violence.
